Master of Arts (Theological Studies) (MATS)

PURPOSE OF THE DEGREE

The Master of Arts (Theological Studies) (MATS) is a graduate program of theology for lay and religious students. The MATS program offers theological preparation for ministries other than priesthood, such as the permanent diaconate, or for personal theological enrichment. The program is aligned to the academic standards of The National Directory for the Formation, Ministry, and Life of Permanent Deacons. Candidates in formation for the permanent diaconate in the Archdiocese of Miami and the Diocese of Palm Beach receive their academic formation through the MATS program.

PRINCIPAL GOALS OF THE MASTER OF ARTS (THEOLOGICAL STUDIES) PROGRAM

The goals of the MATS program are expressed in the following Student Learning Outcomes, which require graduates to be able to

express a competent understanding of Catholic theology including Scripture, systematic theology, moral theology, and historical theology (Content: MATS SLO-1);
develop theological arguments with pastoral applications demonstrating the ability to conduct research using appropriate resources, synthesize and logically organize information, and evaluate nuanced perspectives (Developing Theology: MATS SLO-2);
communicate theological concepts for the lay public grounded in research and knowledge in a way that is engaging, contextually aware, and pastoral (Communication: MATS SLO-3).
